iPhone

A place 2 discuss everything iPhone

It's been rumored that Apple will be charging users to get ringtones, apps, widgets, etc. It seems users may not simply use one of their songs as a ringtone, and also that everything must be authorized by Apple.

I think that, if Apple decides to close iPhone's ecology system, it may boost profits in the short term, but eventually hurt the long term view of the product, as innovations from outsiders will only be available elsewhere.

What would you think of this?

I can understand Apple wanting to control what gets put on the iPhone. They are very good at creating user interfaces and can insure that each program will work well with each other. Look at all the hack programs there are for Palm or Windows Mobile. Some can be pretty damaging to the device. Apple could create some kind of iCertified logo for programs that pass it's quality checks.

yeah but that is also the case with tiger's widgets. Anyone can make them, and when tiger was first released, they found a respectful threat over the way a widget could use safari to do something harmful.
And keep in mind what SJobs said in his "Thoughts about music" text.
